Space Tourism, lucrative segment for aviation industry where top companies like Virgin Galactic, Blue Orgin, wants to explore, leisure, research etc…
Commonly, this tourism is experienced with different types of spaceflights like high altitude jet fighter flights, atmospheric zero-gravity flights, short-duration suborbital flights, and longer duration orbital trips into space.
Regulations & Concepts
The UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to regulate private space ventures and space tourism enterprises.
The current approach to space tourism and the development of vehicles to access space are virtually all based on extensions of current rocket launch vehicle and rocket plane development.
If one takes a longer-term view of space travel and the development of safer ways to lift humans into Earth orbit and travel into space.
Advanced methods include such concepts as the use of tethers, complete space elevators to geostationary orbit (GEO), advanced ion engine thrusters, nuclear propulsion of various types, lighter-than-air craft together with ion engines, and solar electric propulsion.
Once GEO is achieved, concepts such as ion engines, solar sail technology, nuclear propulsion, and solar electric propulsion, become increasingly more interesting and plausible.
Virgin Galactic vs Blue Orgin
Virgin Galactic – SpaceShip Two
SpaceShip Two is a reusable, winged spacecraft designed to carry eight people (including two pilots) into space safely and with high frequency. The world’s first passenger carrying spaceship to be built by a private company and operated in commercial service.
SpaceShipTwo is powered by a hybrid rocket motor – combining elements of solid rockets and liquid rocket engines.
Passengers – Richard Branson, Beth Moses, Colin Bennett, Sirisha Bandla, Dave Mackay and Michael Masucci, with C.J. Sturckow and Kelly Latimer piloting the Carrier Ship.
Launched Date – July 11,2021
Vehicle Type – High Altitude Airplane (Sub-orbital Spaceflight)
Range – 86km approx
Blue Origin – New Shepard’s rocket-and-capsule
New Shepard is our reusable suborbital rocket system designed to take astronauts and research payloads within minutes of high-quality microgravity or partial-G to past the Kármán line. This Spaceflight named after Mercury Astronaut Alan Shepard.
The vehicle is fully autonomous. Every person onboard is a passenger—there are no pilots.
Passengers – Jeff Bezos, Mark Bezos, Wally Funk, Oliver Daemen .
Launched Date – July 20, 2021
Vehicle Type – Rocket Ship (Sub-orbital Spaceflight)
Range – 107km approx
[ *Kármán line – 100km above mean sea level, set by Fédération aéronautique internationale (FAI) ]
